The Dog and the King

Sirius or Alpha Canis Maior, commonly known as the Dog Star, is the most precious gem in the constellation Canis Major. Note by the ancient Egyptians, who relied on its heliacal rise to their calendar, with the name of Isis, an emanation of the natural power of divinity, was held responsible for the beneficial flooding of the Nile in the period warmest year. This is why the heat is commonly defined as a heat wave - from Latin canicula - and it is believed due to its influence. Sirius is the brightest star in the night sky and is one of the three vertices of the triangle winter asterism consisting of a geometric shape particularly recognizable, along with Alpha Canis Minor, or Procyon, and Betelgeuse, shoulder of the constellation Orion. [...]

Regulus, or Alpha Leonis, also known as the Heart of the Lion, part of the constellation of the same name, was one of four real stars of the Persians and was aptly named by various ancient peoples such as the King - among others, the Babylonians, Greeks, Arabs. Its orbit is often the door to cross the moon's position, from which it is often hidden, but it has been identified for the first time the procession of the equinoxes. Regulus is a double star, with less visible with a companion of his own celestial motion, and that in turn is actually composed of two stars very close and difficult to separate. [...]

Lessons learned by heart from his earliest childhood. Even at thirty-six, the day of his death, Sirius Black would still have been able to repeat with my eyes closed the exact data of the magnitude of its star, its inclination on Earth and its motion over the centuries. Orion His father had wanted their children knew the magnificence of the stars that you please bring the names, not to forget the glory that they would have to bring to the family honor.

always remembered also dissatisfied and sullen expression Regulus's when his eyes ran down the lines for Sirius, most precious gem and brightest star in the night sky. The child is comforted, however, when it was time to repeat that Regulus was defined as the King . Her voice soaring acute child with pride on that title and he was important to him, Sirius, a snort of mock boredom.

Sometimes he happened to think that those in astronomy learning sessions had already been completely designed around the core of their relationship.

has treated the special of their stars trying to establish what was the most admirable, but a comparison was already won at the start. That brightest star in the night sky eliminated in the bud any possible claim of Regulus, that nothing could ever compete with that comparison. At the time he claimed he had, rejoicing in the victory that once again in astronomy as in any other single aspect of life, placed him on a step higher than the younger brother.

Sometimes around in his twenties, Sirius had stopped to think on the celestial body whose brother was the depositary of the name. Regulus, the star dual, the treacherous double agent who had rebelled against his Dark Lord.

He never knew how and for what reasons he made that gesture of revolt. He had always said that cowardice was the engine that had led him to go back on their choices and decide to escape the path he had undertaken, with the contemptuous condescension that usually merciless already reserved the school years.

A star is not independent, it needed a partner to accomplish your bike. He had never been able, Regulus, to act in a self-sufficient. As a child he was from the brother, which is oriented to face life. And when you said this, Sirius deliberately forgot what it had been mutual.

fact had always repeated to friends, with defiance, who from memory had Regulus was a ball and chain, an offshoot annoying unintended and which clung to him like an annoying pest. He added, smiling maliciously, that irrefutable evidence was that, when compared with individual action, it was demonstrated that weak that it was proving unable to take clear positions and swaying like a weathervane. Had labeled with the coldness of his brother's death as a natural consequence of his ineptitude.

He had not dwelt on the event as well. Who had dared questions, he simply replied that he had never gotten along with Regulus and certainly he was very happy to become the direct heir of the Black family in its place. Do not expect much, he said, to feel that finally evict higher, free from any yoke which, however, he had in his time served.

conclude, with sufficient, arguing that, basically, he and Regulus had always hated.

And if any thought contrary to the weak looked unconscious mind, Sirius repeated stubborn that they were insignificant details. Was deeply hurt by a break that had defined the beneficial and regenerating, were classified as irrelevant all he brought back his feelings toward any black who was not his uncle Alphard Andromeda or something different to hatred and contempt.

He called and never confessed his silent presence outside the cemetery, on the day of the funeral of his brother, as a moment of weakness due to the ridiculously exhausting and stressful time participating in activities Order.

cataloged the melancholy of weeks after his death as stemming from a mattana sense of overwhelming loneliness that war and the inevitable separation from friends, in turn absorbed by the struggle, adversely.

Then you said casually that it was simply boredom of the days of eternal push to enclosed, from time to time, leafing among the things that had belonged to Regulus in the afternoons too long isolation in Grimmauld Place, while the other members of the New Order of the Phoenix acted freely outside.

justify its decision to keep the old books and some effects of the boy in your room, saving you from cleaning and total summary he and Molly subjected the family home by freeing nearly all that had been owned by its with weak excuse, but when it ordered him to believe blindly, that would serve to vent their anger overwhelming destructive when the memory of the dark years spent with family members within those walls had been too unbearable.

laughed maliciously, with the excuse of tiredness and frustration, when Remus one night, following the trail of lights on, he found property that had been sitting on the bed of his brother and lost in the empty gaze with an expression of pain, only a few days before death plucked him in the Office Mysteries.

In the explanation given by denigration Remus did not answer at first. He just only look into his eyes, inscrutable, for several long seconds that Sirius could not help but feel the giddiness of the distressing truth.

Then the werewolf he spoke with his usual meekness.

"There is nothing wrong, you know, "he said, without looking up. "After all, it was still your brother."

smiled faintly, almost with embarrassment, before turning and leaving him alone.

Sirius not breathed for a few seconds.

Then perhaps it was fatigue, maybe the accumulated helplessness, regret, guilt devastating for so many years tied him into knots or the inevitable and painful awareness of having lost in one way or another, a bit 'at a time, almost all persons in their he loved life, including secondarily himself.

Slowly, almost without realizing it, turned his head toward the head of the bed and gently reached out a hand - thin, bony and ruined - timidly stroked the quilt that covered the pillow. He closed his eyes instinctively, while beyond the fabric of his fingertips found themselves with the imagination of the sinuous neck of the baby brother, the silky texture of hair just above his clear and subtle harmonic and the projection of his nose straight , again without lifting the eyelids.

The light was off and he feels the dark, groping, and Regulus was crying softly.

"I had a bad dream," murmured aghast. "I'm afraid."

His hand continued to slide, as it was seldom kind.

"I tell him?" He asked softly, nestled on the corner of the bed better. The head of Regulus moved sharply under his fingers.

"No. I do not want, it scares me, "replied the smaller with his anguished voice.

He snorted silently, not impatient. It was not very understanding, but it was night and fear of his brother made him restless, too.

"If you tell them, bad dreams, then you pass the fear, she told me Mom," insisted, and his hand slid to squeeze gently on the shoulder lean Regulus - and slipped, with the same movement, to make the quilt now empty.

The child hesitated, her breath still broken by sobs.

"There was ..." began Pigola. "I was there, you and Cissy," continued more firmly, and Sirius encouraged him affectionately by increasing the close on his shoulder. "And we were ... I do not know where, in a kind of wood. We were walking ... and then there was this noise. As a kind of howling, but different. Worst and roared. There fright and began to run away to escape, and became night. "As he spoke, his voice became more broken and terrified, and Sirius found himself to bend down because he felt which was nearby, and leaned her head on his back - and I support it, too, on the mattress cool.

"And then?" She whispered, good-natured.

"continues to be closer and he felt they made a noise as he walked, he was big and smelled bad. We ran and it was getting darker and darker, "resumed Regulus anxiously. "I turned around and was gone. We called it, continues to call and ask where you were but I was alone and did not know where to go and ran. And then came. Was an animal great big, tall as a tree, with long teeth, had two heads and was half covered with scales, half of hair and his mouth was covered with blood and I thought you had eaten and that was about to eat me, "he added, with a sob which he responded by returning the hand on his head. "And then stretched out a leg and I was taking. I cried and you came along, "he concluded, and there were fresh tears in her voice.

He was not afraid of monsters, although it was unusual for a child his age - he liked to proclaim the great who was not afraid of almost nothing. It was on the verge of laughing and jesting little brother reminding him that there were no animals like that, but just then the hand of Regulus clung to what he had lying by his side while the other was running through his hair. The child's fingers are laced with urgency and its Sirius no longer thought to tease. It was his brother and was afraid.

"You want me to call my mother?" Muttered embarrassed.

Again, the head of Regulus moved in denial.

"I'm not a coward," said tremulously, pulling up his nose.

He smiled in the dark - and smiled in an empty room - before you slip off your shoes with a football and make his way against the body of the baby, pulling the blanket to get under.

"Maybe I'm here," he speculated, vague.

Regulus did not respond, apparently because it calmed the idea. Remained crouched in the little space available without speaking, her hand still clinging to that of big brother, his eyes wide open but the breathing quieter.

"We do not think anymore, Reg," I asked him, in a whisper. "There, that animal. Do not eat anybody. "

Regulus nodded with a sigh of weariness, before rubbing his face in the pillow with drowsiness.

"You do not make them, the bad dreams?" Asked more quietly, warmed by the body warmth of the friend at his side.

He did not hesitate even for a moment, proud, and bully.

"No, never," he says, lying.

"Never ever?" Regulus insisted admired.

"Never," he repeated with pride.

Regulus yawning cheered, as was crouching and leaning her head against his shoulder.

"If this happens and I'll call the company," he suggested, already mumbling.

He chuckled, half amused, half pleased.

"I'll let you know," he muttered, starting to turn to nod off.

Regulus mumbled a final agreement, and then it was just sleep, rest, relax and breathe.

The night came back quiet and peaceful, with no monsters, screams or yells, just the two sleeping children.

"I did lots of bad dreams, all these years, but there was nobody to keep me company," Sirius whispered bitterly, his voice trembling with suppressed pain.

"You said something, Padfoot?" Aroused him from a distance the voice of Remus.

Sirius's eyes widened suddenly, with a gasp of surprise.

Artificial light in the room which was surrounded by desert was almost hurt your eyes, and looked down at the empty bed and the orderly who was still sitting. He blinked a few times before lifting a hand with annoyance, and shame, two tiny tears to dry.

"No," replied in a loud voice to be heard, hoarsely. "No, I did not say anything. "

shook his head and took a deep breath, and facial expression returned all'inflessibile hardness shady. He rose from the mattress as if Scott, clutching her arms around her shoulders with a gesture of distress. Bowing his head down turned off the light, before embarking on opening the window.

He leaned across the sill, pointing to regain the sight in the sky brightly lit metropolis, the path that led him to star as two notes. Sirius shone faintly just above the roof of a building, but Regulus was not visible. He continued his vain search, methodically examining every inch of sky accessible, but recognize the star of the King did not succeed. Maybe it was hidden somewhere roof, or maybe at that time was covered by the moon in the sky at any rate not be heard.

And it was a sky blue, incomplete.
